PSA: I’ve gathered these commonly acknowledged health benefits based on others’ “scientific” research and articles.
Chimichurri has been around for many decades. It has gained much fame over the years as a compliment for the grilling community.
In a previous entry, I discussed its origins and how it came to be. Chimichurri, in the Basque language, essentially means a mixture of several ingredients. These are ingredients we can pronounce and understand. No scientific names to disguise additives and preservatives.
It wasn’t until recently that I realized that our Chimichurri sauce has many healthy ingredients that provide benefits to the human body. Before reading the scientific details about the ingredients, it helps to note that our AXEL Chimichurris use all-natural and non-GMO ingredients which help label them as Keto/Paleo-friendly, Vegan, Gluten-free, No-sugar added, and 0g net carbs.
It’s about time we shed some light on why Chimichurri is one of the healthiest choices we can pick up that has uncompromisingly delicious flavors. Let’s start with the most common.
1) Extra Virgin Olive Oil
EVOO is considered the star of olive oils because it’s the healthiest olive oil to date. It’s known to have healthy fats, anti-oxidants, and mono-saturated fats. These fats are amazing for skin and hair and have been liked to fight off bad diseases (PS1000). Research has also shown that adding olive oil to your diet could reduce the chances of having a stroke (WebMD). Lastly, EEVO studies have shown to help lower cholesterol.
2) Garlic
Garlic, especially the fresh kind, has become more of a popular item and is considered a superfood. Garlic is proven to reduce the chances of cardiovascular diseases (WHFoods). The same article mentions that garlic provides other health advantages such as boosting the immune, inflammatory and digestive systems. Garlic is also a great source for vitamins C, B1 and B6.
3) Oregano
Many people consider oregano as nature’s antibiotic. It’s a great source for fiber and Vitamin A, which maintains the immune system (FoodFacts). Oregano also helps one sweat as a method for detoxing and helps reduce fever and prevent colds.
4) Parsley
As one of the world’s healthiest herbs, Parsley is a great source for vitamins K, C and A. To quote straight from the source (WHFoods):
The first type is volatile oil components—including myristicin, limonene, eugenol, and alpha-thujene. The second type is flavonoids—including apiin, apigenin, crisoeriol, and luteolin.
Parsley's volatile oils—particularly myristicin—have been shown to inhibit tumor formation in animal studies, and particularly, tumor formation in the lungs. Myristicin has also been shown to activate the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase, which helps attach the molecule glutathione to oxidized molecules that would otherwise do damage in the body. The activity of parsley's volatile oils qualifies it as a "chemoprotective" food, and in particular, a food that can help neutralize particular types of carcinogens (like the benzopyrenes that are part of cigarette smoke and charcoal grill smoke).
5) Other ingredients: Red Wine Vinegar, Ají & Paprika Peppers, Cilantro
These other ingredients are said to carry health benefits as well, but I think you’re getting the point by now.
In summary, our Chimichurri is a great combination of healthy ingredients that support the body. The beauty of Chimichurri is that you don’t have to eat the herbs and olive oil by themselves, rather as a mixture of several ingredients. And the best part about all of this is that it has an amazing flavor. Luckily for you, we offer a Original Chimichurri made exactly like how the Argentine-cowboys would in Patagonia, a Verde Chimichurri that takes a modern approach on how people recognize Chimichurri at steak houses and restaurants, and a Spicy Chimichurri that lights you up just the right amount where you can still enjoy the taste of your dish.
